This meme is a way to discuss the books that have made their way to film, or to talk about the books we wish would be made into a movie. You are open to talk about any book out there in any way that you want. For example: Who would you have play the leads in the movie? Who would direct? Animated or live action? Etc. For more info about how to include your own Make it a Movie Monday (MiaMM) on your blog, click here.
This week my meme will focus on GRASSHOPPER JUNGLE by Andrew Smith. GRASSHOPPER JUNGLE is the most unusual young adult book I have ever read. Raging hormones, ancestral influences, bugs that bite –hard… Check out my review here. If a movie is ever made (which would be totally awesome, I might add) I can only hope they consider the people below in casting.
Let me know what you think of my cast in the comments below!

Sixteen-year-old Austin Szerba interweaves the story of his Polish legacy with the storyof how he and his best friend , Robby, brought about the end of humanity and the rise of an army of unstoppable, six-foot tall praying mantises in small-town Iowa.
To make matters worse, Austin's hormones are totally oblivious; they don't care that the world is in utter chaos: Austin is in love with his girlfriend, Shann, but remains confused about his sexual orientation. He's stewing in a self-professed constant state of maximum horniness, directed at both Robby and Shann. Ultimately, it's up to Austin to save the world and propagate the species in this sci-fright journey of survival, sex, and the complex realities of the human condition.
Jimmy Bennett – Austin Szerba
Jimmy Bennett is best known for his roles in Daddy Day Care, Hostage, Poseidon, Orphan and as young James T. Kirk in Star Trek. As a child, he lent his voice to films and video games, including Snow Buddies (Buddha), The Polar Express and Kingdom Hearts II.
When I picture Austin in my mind, I picture this young actor. Only 18 at the time of this write-up, he could easily pass for a 16 year old. His personality and experience would provide exactly what the role needs, a young up-and-coming actor who is willing to take risks and provide plenty of hormonal and emotional instability.
CARTER JENKINS – ROBBY Brees
Carter Jenkins has experience playing a homosexual character in film, with his previous role as Nicholas Forbes in Struck by Lightning. He’s held many other roles, both in film and television.
Carter is exactly how I envision Robby to look. Plus, the actor is a risk-taker, both in film and in his personal life. I think his personality will fit the role perfectly. Although he is in his early twenties, he could easily pass for a teen.
Sophie Turner – Shann Collins
Sophie Turner is best known for her role as Sansa Stark in the Game of Thrones television series on HBO.
Although she is a British actress, Sophie Turner can easily adapt to an American role. She has a vulnerability and innocence about her that would lend perfectly to the “girl next door” character of Shann. I would love to see her take on the contemporary role of Austin’s unfortunate girlfriend – goodness knows she could take it after the abuse her character has suffered in Game of Thrones.
THE PRAYING MANTIS – This Guy >
Most mantises are exclusively predatory, and typically ambush their prey. Once caught, if the prey does not resist, the mantis eats it alive. However, if the prey does resist, the mantis often eats it head first. Sexual cannibalism is common among mantises. The female may begin feeding by biting off the male’s head (as they do with regular prey) or more commonly when the male dismounts.
Mantises are the ideal insect to terrify readers and film goers alike.
